A person is considered to have low vision
when vision cannot be corrected to normal (20/20) with ordinary glasses and
cannot be restored with surgery or medical treatment. A state of low vision
exists when the reduced vision impairs a person's normal functioning.
Many
individuals can utilize special reading or telescopic glasses, handheld
magnifiers or telescopes, large print or "talking" devices, special lighting
or closed circuit television systems.
A low vision assessment is much longer than
a routine eye exam. Patients have the opportunity to try many devices, ask
questions and learn new ways of doing things. Individuals are also
encouraged to borrow items for trial use.
Services for Children
A low vision assessment is helpful
for many children with reduced vision. Recommendations will help families,
teachers and therapists understand how or what the child can see. Use of
adaptive equipment and low vision aids can allow a child to utilize
remaining vision and function more effectively in the classroom. A final
report will provide practical information about the child's visual
abilities, recommendations for low vision aids and suggestions for classroom
adaptations.
Services for Adults
Special reading glasses, magnifiers,
clip-on lenses and lighting can allow many individuals to read. A large
variety of closed circuit television systems are also available.
To enhance distance vision, there are a wide
range of telescopes and telescopic glasses available that may help.
Low Vision Services also works in collaboration with Edwin Shaw Hospital to
provide the Northern Ohio Bioptic
Driving Program.
